Be transparent with your client and your teams, don't sugar-coat or be afraid to deliver bad news, communicate early and often, delegate to your teams and inspect what you expect, and treat people with respect. The rest usually takes care of itself.
Know more about a few things than anyone else on the project. E.g. The timeline (memorized), the deliverables, the RACI, etc. Also get good at powerful escalations (loud enough, soon enough, high enough), with who by when for resolution. And be the person to hold people to account for their resolutions and deliverables. And don't be a dick.
Prepare to be screwed now - from all sides. I kid - good luck and just be yourself
The first lesson I learned in consulting: it's all about managing expectations.
No one cares if you need to ask for help, they care if you don't deliver.
Always have an exit strategy available. Politics can eat you alive.... both internally and at clients!!!!
Ask for help, especially other SMs, and be real. MD 1's suggestions are great, especially the last one.
