What are everyone's thoughts on firm activities/professional development work that you do outside billable hours? Anyone else feel that most are a complete waste of time?

Im a SM and most of it is a waste of time because they are poorly led and the objective is unclear. Know your objective and what you want the result to be, the the initiative can have merit.

If a Partner/Director/SM, can't do that - you are wasting your time

like

I will add the professional development will have more impact than firm activities. But not much. What matters is the internal projects you support and how impactful those projects are and how impactful your contribution on said project was. "Impact" is the key word. Make sure your efforts are impactful.

like

Don't do it expecting it to impact your raise or chance of promotion, because it doesn't. Plenty of ppl that skip things like Impact Day at Deloitte (firm wide volunteer day) still get promoted.

like

You're a BTA, hence will not give you shit for asking such a question. It is not a waste of time when you are working to develop a new POV or service offering that will help generate more sales. More sales = more billable hours.

like

It's a good way to build your network. Depends on how much you like the current work you do or people that you work with.

like

PwC 1 I understand. But what I've also noticed is that a lot of Ms, SMs will have fresh new analysts spend countless hours on evenings and weekends doing mundane tasks on things that they probably won't get recognized for + are not interested in but don't want be the new kid that says no.

But then again really depends on the type of work you do + the people you work with.

It's good for getting your foot in the door for something new.

Waste of time but you need to do it for "optics" - find something you can sort of stomach so that you have shit to put on your YE. Since you know "compared to your peers" you don't want to be behind.

If you asked to be considered for early promotion and didn’t get it (despite being highly rated, exceeding billable goal, etc) would you look elsewhere? Is it right to be angry about it? I don’t want to spin myself up unnecessarily if it’s unjustified

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

Hello! I’m going to BSchool in August. Any recommendations on books / websites / videos to be more prepared for management consulting interviews?

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?
