I used them in a non-traditional way one year. My students set reading growth goals and action steps to meet those goals, then I gave them the option to use reading logs to track if they were actually following action steps if they said they were going to spend time reading each day.
It just doesn't make sense to me to force kids to do them as homework.
Never used them.
Reading logs— no.
Literature circles— yes.
I actually miss them. My routine with them was based on in class instruction and since I have so few students in the building (Average 1 to 2 per day with Hybrid) I stopped. I have them reading newsela.com articles, Readworks.com stories, and Actively Learn. I can track their reading on these websites with the built in quizzes. Readworks is free by the way. If you have Renaissance Place they just added a feature of short articles with 5 question quizzes too.
I will eventually go back to reading logs for sure.
Good luck.
Yes we let them choose their own titles and require they read a specific number each marking period. Last Marking period I restricted it to Newsela.com and Actively Learn. Then I took their 8 highest scores and averaged it for a grade. So if they want a higher grade, theybread more. I also offered Wednesday afternoon group meetings to do some together for those students who wanted extra help. About 1/3 of the class came to those over the course of the marking period. Most students did well.
