We have two open media planner positions in Durham, NC that we’re actively interviewing for. Our client needs are heavily digital and social. That said, we don’t separate media, analytics, programmatic and adOps responsibilities, our media team is responsible for it all from ideation through optimization. We have high expectations for ourselves, but also have a great support system in place that emphasizes development at all levels. If you’re excited by this type of a role, shoot me a note. Keep making good work as a copywriter and keep getting promoted, nothing complicated about it really
Yea your resume really has nothing to do with it (aside from the names on it). Your portfolio is 90% of what matters.
Yes, you need to be a solid creative but that’s table stakes. And frankly, not everyone who gets promoted is a star. Especially as you get more senior, non creative things (or people) matter more and more. But your ecds and cco will want to believe you’ll make them look good and keep clients happy. Awards are great. Stable clients are too. Will you deliver and keep the process under control? So no (few) bad meetings where your team misses the mark.
Then, can you also handle clients- present to them, make them feel comfortable, make them understand why something will take longer or give them other bad news while making them feel valued and ensuring that they know you understand their agenda too?
Can you make your account team comfortable your team will deliver? On strategy and on time. No huge surprises. And often, saying yes to saving the day at the cost of a weekend even though you know someone else screwed up (being a “team player”).
It becomes much more about managing the process, anticipating problems of timing or production, etc.
Learn how to manage and mentor, the more senior you get the more you have to be the person to guide the next juniors.
