I would assume somewhere in the $500-$1,000 range. At the remote agencies I’ve worked, they assume any childcare would be covered as if you were in office, so I don’t think you could count that as an official benefit. Driving/public transit depends on your location, so my estimate would scale. But if you’re just looking at the value for remote work based on commute/child care, it’s not that great.
Productivity would be a bigger value, but that’s more for the company than it is for you and I.
It really does depend on you specific situation but I think that you can add all of that up, car maintenance that is a good 2000 a month (Childcare is a killer).
Even if you discount the money you are not making on the way to and from work (That you could be making from home) it is even more money that you are losing out on. Also!! If you factor in the problems we are having with climate change (record heat and cold) due to all of us "smartly" driving and commuting to work every day when we COULD be working from home, it is thousands.
Remote job classification*
Just add everything up for your area. It's hard to say without knowing where you are based, as COL is different everywhere. Estimate what you could potentially be saving, add a slight buffer, and you'll have your answer.
Exactly. The COL of your area also matters, so it is very individualized.
Well, let's say you have to pay $2,000 a year for child care and $500 a year on commuting expenses. That's a total of $2,500 a year. In addition, let's say you save $100 a year on lunch and $500 a year on lost productivity. That's a total of $650 a year.
So, if we add all of those savings up, we get $3,150 a year. That's the dollar value of a fully remote job for you. Of course, your individual savings may be different, but this should give you a good idea of the potential savings.
