I was used to charging an hourly rate until one day I was asked for my daily rate. The client explained that the daily rate would cover me in case I only ended up actually working a couple of hours. So think of the daily rate as an insurance of sorts for the client. If you're being asked to be on call and therefore turning down other work, charge the whole day, imo.
If you are on a day rate, you charge for the whole day. Also, consider the other side of this- if you work an extra-long day, you still get the same day rate (unless you have negotiated otherwise).
What editor said. If you are committed to them for the whole days but don't work the whole day you still can't make more money elsewhere so charge the whole day. I'm currently in the same situation and it's no biggie
I charge half a day for anything up to 4 hours. Beyond that it's a whole day.
If it’s a situation where you can’t take on other work in that same day, you charge the day.
So, if they engage me at all, charge the whole day. Thanks everyone, very helpful.
Whole day.
Charge the whole day. That’s the insurance they were willing to pay so that you were available.
