I wish y’all would stop acting like Halle was only selected because she’s black. She’s an amazing singer and it’s a musical. The role doesn’t have any cultural reliance so Ariel could have been any color. Tiana is about a black woman from NOLA who is on her way and her culture is prominent in the movie. Stop being weird.

Mulan? Should be Chinese
Moana? Should be Pacific Islander
Joan of Arc? Should be white
I do not care about the skin color of a fictional half woman, half fish.

C1 - not gonna lie, I just think of Jefferson and Lafayette as black now (That actor’ portrayal just really hit it for me).
Well Ariel is a mermaid.... So unless you are a mermaid... Not sure why you'd be mad.
You put what I assume are “white woman tears” in a post as a defense, so I’ll just respond with 🙄
Ariel being white wasn’t relevant to the storyline. Tiana being black is relevant to the storyline.
TA1 I think anyone paying even the slightest amount of attention or having any cultural awareness about race dynamics in the Deep South saw how race was relevant to the story.

Maybe Disney did it so little brown and black girls can have more than Tiana to look up to….if you’re upset about the color of skin of a fictional character I promise you need help.
TAC1 then what point are you trying to make? Because it sounds like a whole lot of nonsense.
Rising Star
Since the original mermaid was a Babylonian God, skin tone was probably brown, so the current movie is probably closer in color than the white images.

I wish they'd make a live action princess and the frog with a black lead. That would've been an amazing remake since it's set in New Orleans, and the scenes were full of culture.
As for Ariel, you're missing the point that little black girls can see a black MERMAID. And Ariel is basically a historical figure for a 5 year old.

That's just compelte ignorance, and you shouldn't even pay any mind to those people. Anybody can tell stories from any culture that they appreciate. Art is put out in this world for all to love and appreciate. Nobody has a claim on anybody else's expression.
Ariel is a MERMAID. The fact that you’re concerned about her being either white or black is frankly bewildering.
I had literally no thoughts about it at all until this post. Ariel is a cartoon mermaid so, I didn’t think there was relevance.

The beast? Should be?

Your mom (sorry, I just wanted to say it. I don't mean it 🥹)
Why argue about fictional characters themselves when we can just argue about the history of racism in Hollywood & how, even in 2023, it carries over into the fictional realm?

Can I just mention I recently posted a question asking why Disney keeps producing new live action remakes that I have yet to see one I've enjoyed and everyone trashed me because they assumed I was talking about the Little Mermaid because I didn't like that she was black. Yet here you go posting this (which is explicitly about race) and nobody is here trashing you and pooping all over your opinions. Just saying.
To answer your question, I've never seen a live action remake I've liked. I would give The Princess and the Frog a chance, because as others have mentioned, New Orleans could lead to a very visually appealing film. HOWEVER, I thought the same about the new live action Aladdin and I wasn't particularly blown away by the new Aladdin.
The visuals of the new live action remakes remind me almost of Marvel movies. Both new live action remakes and older Marvel movies (ie, the live action Cinderella and Marvel movies like Avengers or Thor) have clouded colors and marketing materials (see below). In the example below, we have the clouded backgrounds with the muted tones, and the bright colors come in on Thor's cape and Cinderella's gown.
As we move towards newer Marvel movies like Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor: Ragnarok, we have the brighter, bolder colors as are seen in Aladdin and Little Mermaid. While these color palates are brighter than the older live action reimaginations, I still think they're significantly darker than the films from which they originated.
Um. Isn't that also how the story was? The frog prince was a german fairy tale.

Yup, and there was a little backlash about that when the princess and the frog was released. It was a different time then; people hadn't started organizing together as much on social media.
