What is this DLA Piper firm people keep mentioning in this bowl? I have literally never run across it professionally but I see it is apparently top 5 gross income. Does it do that insurance defense thing people keep talking about here which I have also never heard of?

I find it really hard to believe you have not somehow run into DLA Piper. I’d never work there, but they are huge. It’s like not knowing who Baker McKenzie is.

likefunny

I think this is a case of a “you” problem.

like

They are like dentons. They are massive and technically biglaw, but no one from my law school ever went to them

like

Friends don’t let friends go to DLA.

like

They do IP and employment work in the nether reaches of the planet that other firms have never reached before or have connections. Other firms just reach out to DLA instead of make relationships with local counsel

like

DLA does much more than IP and employment. It has pretty much every type of corporate and litigation group possible because of the size of the firm. I hate working here but it’s undeniable that the firm does pretty much every kind of work.

like

I love DLA as a client. Ute Krudewagen is the best.

Cheers to that

This is my first job in a large corporate company, and I’m trying to gauge how long it normally takes to move from entry level to another internal position in the insurance industry. I have been applying internally for a year now and I am wondering if this is normal or if my company is just slow? I am a top performer, with great metrics, and I have some wonderful connections I’ve made who support me. I just can’t seem to move up. How long did it take you to move up? How many tries did it take?

Should I leave my first permanent job as a team leader of 4 DPs in a FMCG business (only been there for 4 months) to join a huge Tech business for a 12months contract?

They offer me 60% more money than my permanent role. Circa 2000 dollars every month in my pocket

However, I am worried if I accept the tech role and I do not become permanent I will be looking again for a job in 12-24 months and my CV won't be showing a managerial position. Won't be showing any progress.

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
