I work with a couple people in the role and it looks like a tough role to be in. Lots of upwards and downwards pressures. Would be helpful to have 5-10 years of 100% presales experience to get it or they might just promote internally.
I second that...promoting internally is always preferred by Salesforce in this one...they need to be super sure when they go external
100% it's pre sales role and the compensation would be base(based on HLOc), wide range of bonus and less RSUs
Initial challenges, to be associate with right category of groups, commercial vs smb vs select and these days even the industry matters.
You need to speak less technical and more business focus value proposition, to excel in this role. Need presentation skills top notch with story telling mindset.

@OP- is this role in CSG or in Licensing grp?
Got it! Then PA1 is on point what role entails. There is another role with similar title in CSG which is more people manager career route
Solution consultant is the same as functional consultant / BA etc. What is range of comp they told you?
