What kind of events do you think are not reasonable to request schedule changes once it’s been set? Obviously if you’re sick you can’t come in, but what if you suddenly had a friend come into town and you just want to take the day off?

I mean, if someone is just texting their coworker asking to switch or cover for them, that's fine. But if an employee is calling out for something like this, that would be grounds for termination in my opinion.

So in my experience, it depends on who you work for and whether or not you have been a team player up until that point. If your not a call out all the time and down to help out. Hell yeah we'll find someone to cover your shift, If your a fly by night and I honestly don't need you and could do your job and MINE then sorry Charlie your gonna have to make a choice of what's moré important to you, because as a business owner of I'm not making money with you AT WORK then really what's the difference if I let you go??? FACTS.

That sounds fun!!! Friends are fun! As long as they get thier shift covered they can go enjoy the time with thier friend.
Always refer to your company’s time off and request policy in the hand book. This may vary from company to company.

I think big picture here and think about the staff member who is doing this. What kind of employee are they? Have they called out a lot? Is this a pattern? Would you be coaching them up, or coaching them out?

Servers often have jobs like this for the flexibility and easy switches.

For me and my team, once the schedule is posted it is on them to get thier shift covered. Keep thier problem, thier problem to solve. You can give them advice and suppport. But at the end of the day, you are thier to run the business.

If it’s impossible for them to cover thier shifts, consider hiring more staff to cross train or work part time to make this easier.
You want your team hungry for shifts.
Do you have enough staff to shift the power?

At the end of the day, we are a culture that lives to work and that seems backwards to me.
If you can help fosture a culture of supporting time off within the rules and guidelines, you’re team will step up for you when you need them too.

I always make sure my friend knows that they need to let me know when they are in town, otherwise I’m at work. As a manager you are the example.

If it’s not urgent or pre-planned, it's not reasonable from my point of view. Friend visits? Gray area. It’s not unreasonable once in a while, but not all employers see it that way. It depends on your workplace, but giving notice and being honest go a long way. Have you looked at your company’s policy on personal time?

helpful

Context is huge here. Obviously, established policy and protocol should be followed, but for the managers in here, what type of manager do you want to be? For me, if someone called and said hey, my childhood friend who moved to Australia and I haven't seen in 12 years is in town for 6 hours, then yes, I would step up and find a way to make this happen for a good employee and maybe ask if they can add a shift next week or something to balance it out. Now, if they have 4 or 5 long lost friends coming into town, then we're into convo and warning time. All that is to say, honesty on both sides is important, context is important, and evaluating past behaviour is important.

If they can find coverage or someone to switch them shifts, that is one thing. However a friend coming into town last minute doesn't constitute an emergency. I would tell them too bad so sad.

Well it’s not ever OK to call in when you’re not sick. Although so many other people will call in when their friends come to town and leave you high and dry. Why is it wrong when I do it to them?

I take care of business first. That means not stressing crew so one can have a fun day. Crew need to count on everyone pulling the shift. When you allow short time changes they don't feel confident in the job. If it happen alot you will lose good people because of bad decisions

Employers have to inform employees at least 24 hours before they change the schedule employees should have to do the same.

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?
