What problems have you solved in your career, using excel or otherwise, that you are most proud of?

I’m an South east asian. My parents have been trying to get me married through arrange marriage for 6 years. On an average, I get 2-3 proposals every month. It got to a point that I started forgetting why a date with someone did not work. So, I started an excel tracker for each proposal - It has tabs for each candidate and each tab has pros and cons list of dating this person/going ahead with the proposal.

Ha. What dimensions are you measuring?
Good looks, education, food tastes, family backgrounds, connections on alignment on common topics such as politics, arts etc?

I organized my father’s lung transplant on excel. It takes a village but someone has to manage costs, funding sources, contacts, and crowdfunding and it was me. I was part time caretaker, part time hospital and admin chaser, full time organizer and eternally thankful to excel, also WhatsApp, LinkedIn, instagram, and simple folders on laptop (in terms of tools - in terms of people - I can’t even count). He almost got close (as in day close to getting a 2nd donor call) and passed away in multi organ failure mode. It would have been a first in my city for that kind of transplant for a big hospital chain. That one was traumatizing but as a problem solver weirdly I was at my best - I had put reputation on the line in the idea I could “save” him (hated the idea of crowdfunding but did as everyone told me) - everyone in fam asked me for life and death decisions (I’m youngest - it’s amazing why consulting makes people think you know everything, you’re just calm and don’t cry in front of critical stakeholders and at that moment family is one too - good skill set). Ofc - not proud of God complex I may have been developing. I went full delusional dad will make it and probably pushed him away a bit in the end coz couldn’t bear to see him so frail - it’s a crazy excel story to live it but not a proud one for me, personally

Another one I’m really proud of is when I worked with a team for a marketplace in SEA and my leaders across company (this isn’t McK) used my excel for kickass modeling to game play a P&L for thousands of sellers and passed on savings to the sellers’ P&L. It was a mission driven moment for growth of company - David vs Goliath because of competitive factors. That excel used to make my laptop crash but everyone and their mother wanted my excel to run their function. One of my managers used it as a template to make a Power BI style P&L for the whole company - one asset can lead to so much growth. Again took a few weeks, sleepless nights, politics, drama, team effort, and a lot of feedback to build it but my God - it was a beautiful asset built quickly

Excel can tell a whole story in itself

I noticed that a clients MRP was wrong in a systematic way so made an excel model that corrected it allowing them to actually use their huge SAP instance for supply chain planning.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
