I think fiduciary advisors are worth it a lot of the time, depending on the circumstances. Sure, there are fees, but you're working with a person for whom this is the job. I spend too much time working to do both my job and that job at the same time.
You can still do backdoor Roth conversions. A1 is right and you’d pay a financial advisor to tell you to do what A1 just said
I just wanted a simple set-up without paying a financial advisor.
While in lower tax bracket: Max out 401(k) (and convert to Roth), 6mo emergency savings in HYSA, max out IRA (backdoor Roth conversion), Student loan (income driven payments), everything else after expenses goes to a brokerage account invested in a target date fund.
Once in higher bracket: Max out 401(k), max out IRA, max out HSA/FSA, keep emergency savings topped up, loans (start paying down principals with interest over 4.5% in addition to income driven payments), everything else in same brokerage account. May think about CDs or bonds for shorter-than-retirement goals, like for a house/car/trip.
