What would you say are the realistic cons of government work? My newphew is considering joining an entry-level career to get his foot in the door, something like landscaping or working as an assistant in his local courthouse. He's asked for a realistic picture of the downsides, but I'm so cynical I don't know how to be realistic, only bitter. Lol. What would you say are the biggest drawbacks of government work?

1. Everything is slow. Hiring, on boarding, administrative tasks, mission delivery. It's easy to get frustrated

2. Especially at lower GS levels, the work and management can be fairly inflexible. You have your position, you do it. No need for innovation.

3. The feds are bad at getting rid of weak performers so high performers get stuck picking up the slack

Low pay

My dilemma… I am an injury adjuster at a carrier experiencing high inventory that’s barely manageable. A competitor offered a higher salary and manageable workload. BUT, I would like to get into underwriting. I applied for UW position w/ a different carrier and they’ve made an offer. It’s lower than my current salary and significantly lower than what I’d make by taking the first offer. Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

I can really use some direction. My background, I've worked 2 years in strategy and am currently coming off an exhausting year 2 in investment banking. I didn't particularly enjoy either role and am not interested in moving over to the buy-side or some monotonous FP&A role. Everybody says there's exit-ops aplenty, but I find myself with less options and even more picky than I did as an ambitious T2 undergrad student. Where do I go from here?

I was alone and confused. I have never really got the chance to prove myself which makes me all the more depressed. I'm not sure what to do with my future, indecisive and low on confidence.
