What would you say is the best level (if there is one) to have a first baby? I’m currently a Manager trying to determine if I want to get to SM before having a baby. While SM would bring in more money, I’m also worried about juggling it all as a new SM and new baby.

There’s never a perfect time. I will say managers have more flexibility with their schedules than senior associates, which is my level and I am a new parent and have a 2 month old. I think there will always be reasons to wait but you also don’t want to put yourself in the position where if you wait too long you might have problems conceiving or might not be able to have as many kids as you want. In my opinion, being a mom is the most incredible thing in the world. I didn’t believe others when they told me how amazing it would be. I was career driven before my baby and now I’m dreading going back to my job after leave because I want to spend all day with her. I feel more accomplished as a mom than I have ever felt doing my job. In regards to juggling, I think you just adapt to the new lifestyle. It seems daunting but being busier at home might even make you better at your job. In my case, I have become even more organized than I was before. I wish you luck with your decision!

I also want to add, when and if you start trying to have a baby, try not to put too much pressure on yourself. It can take up to a year for healthy couples to get pregnant. It also helps if you are on birth control to stop taking it earlier rather than later as this can impact how long it takes to get pregnant. Also recommend finding a prenatal vitamin that works for you and taking it before getting pregnant.

I worked at Accenture for a few years and noticed most women chose to have their children at manager level. It seems at that level you can delegate, manage your own schedule as well as not have the pressure that senior managers or directors. I had mine at analyst level and got promoted to consultant on my maternity. So definitely would recommend planning a pregnancy just before a promotion thought at Analyst and Consultant level to manage it all is a bit difficult. Especially childcare at analyst at consultant level.

Don’t plan this decision around work. I tried to and we had a really hard time getting pregnant so none of my plans mattered any way!

likesmarthelpful

Exactly my point. Plan work around life not life around work

There isn’t one. Pros and cons to every level. Have a baby when you feel ready and navigate the career stuff as it happens. People who have babies as associates say they can’t imagine waiting longer. People who have babies as partners say they can’t imagine doing it without the resources available as a partner. Both people make it work. There will never be a perfect time.

You absolutely cannot thing this way. If you want a child, have one.

All of what everyone said. I waited to have my second so that I could be with the firm longer etc, just to get laid off last year 20 weeks pregnant. When you’re ready, have your baby.

Thank you M2 and D2. Thankfully, I found a role at BOA but the stress was no paid maternity leave. I’ve survived and the baby is a thriving, full of wonderful attitude, 1 year old.

Best time to get pregnant is ~6 mo before a major promo so you’re a slam dunk and can take leave with the salary bump

What industry has random promotion cycles? Truly curious.

I just had my first 3mo ago. Totally agree that you shouldn’t plan life around work.. it could take much longer than you anticipate. I got pregnant at the associate level and became a manager in my first trimester. You just never know how things will work out. Good luck!!

Work comes second to creating a new life - if you’re fortunate enough to do this literally miraculous feat you have a window of time to do.

I got layoff at 8 months pregnant. There’s no such thing as perfect time.

I’m a Type A planner who is struggling with giving up control on when I will actually become pregnant and trying to plan on when is that ‘perfect time’. I have friends who are pregnant but don’t work and other friends who are single and all about their career right now, so I don’t have anyone that relates. Appreciate everyone’s insight and advice ❤️

This is crazy. If you want a baby, have a baby. What’s work have to do with it??

I was exactly in your shoes too with not having people in my life that could relate to my situation…I had my first at 27 when I was an analyst. Having the baby (and realizing how expensive his nanny was!) propelled me to double down on my career / salary. It was pretty stressful to have a new job + new baby. I would agree with only dealing with one major stressful life event at a time. You can certainly do it but it adds on more stress

like

On the opposite side of this I had a baby at 27 too and I kind of had the opposite reaction. I took a part time job. Salary would be different and better elsewhere but not having public accounting hours was important to me right now. And yes, definitely agree with the stress comment. I got pregnant, moved across the country, and my husband and I both got new jobs all in the same year so it was a lot.

No perfect time. I know people who have tried for 3+ years before getting pregnant and people who started trying assuming it would take over a year and got pregnant the first time. You do it when it's right for you, you'll figure out the work side.

like

If you're already a manager and know the expectations and are doing just fine at it, get preggo now. If it doesn't affect your standing to make SM, then I wouldn't try to time it so I'm taking on new responsibilities and a new baby at the same time. If you happen to get promoted to SM in the meantime, no big deal, you got this!, but I'd rather deal with one new thing at a time given the choice.

This is funny 😄 😆

Get the promotion if it’s just around the corner. You don’t want your career progression to stagnate because of time off for maternity

Lol yeah those of us who took 2+ years to get a BFP only wish we could have this precise of timing

There isn’t a perfect time.

I was told that I won’t be considered for my promotion to SM this year end because I’m on maternity leave. This sounds sketchy given that I did everything in my power to prepare before I went on mat leave. Now I’m pushing my coach and leadership to let me go up for promotion in an off cycle promotion. Is this fair and normal or is this a sign I need to look for a new job and resign? I feel like I’m being punished for being on maternity leave.

My in-laws currently live nearby and they have been so wonderful with date nights, weekday babysitting, etc now that we have a 10 month old. We will probably have baby number 2 right after husband graduates, which is also when we want to move cities. We would probably move 3-4 hours away from them, where we have most of our network (but not immediate family).
