What’s the biggest career risk you’ve taken that actually paid off? A couple of years ago, I left a steady assistant gig with benefits to take a six-month contract on a pilot. Everyone told me I was crazy to give up stability, but that gamble led to my first producer credit and connected me with people I still work with today. It was terrifying and there were weeks where I didn’t know how I’d cover rent, but it ended up being the chance that pushed me forward.

If it doesn’t scare you, it’s not a real risk. Playing safe in this business just means you’ll stay invisible. Sometimes you have to jump without a net.

Bold one! I need some of that courage. What helped you make that decision? I'm looking for some reasons to take a leap of faith.

I accepted a project that was very niche and wasn’t sure if it’d be worth the time or not. Ended up being a great opportunity to meet a lot of people, and that alone helped me a lot.

I’m currently at a studio that has been good to me. They took a chance and allowed me to change career paths. They gave me numerous opportunities that lead me to now, being the head of a department. The big guys at the top has expressed they could see me as the guy to run the company one day but it’s all talk and possibilities right now. I’ll have to wait for now. On the other hand, I have an offer in hand from a much bigger company to be part of their business development. Any advice?

I once asked a colleague at a radio company how much he's paid monthly, and he outright refused to tell me. In fact, he found it very odd that I asked. I later learned that he was making double my salary. I know it's not an employee's job to fix pay inequity by sharing their salary figures, but I'm still of the opinion that it helps uncover pay gaps. But do you think it's wise to do so at the risk of damaging your work environment or the whole thing backfiring on you? Thoughts are welcome.
