50 hours is a majorly slow week in every public firm I've been at 🙃
Routinely 70+ hours. Worst week was over 80. Welcome to professional services.
I may be an outlier, but had an audit with the week before filing where I worked 105+ hours after doing 60-80 for the previous 7 weeks. Out of that situation now, and definitely an outlier week, but by far the hardest of my career
I’m not saying this to be a b*tch because 50 hours is too much in my opinion given the capabilities and resources of firms these days - but 60-70 hours is the norm January through April with a couple 70+ hour weeks around filing
My wife would easily be at 70+ when she was with Deloitte during busy season. And the last few years she was there, she would be at 55+ during the "slow" season bc they didn't have enough staff. That's when she left.
Same for my wife. She now sees our kids which is the biggest victory.
Routinely 55-60 hours, busy season up to 85 hours
Just make sure when you’re looking at your salary you know how much you’re making an hour if you’re salary. If you’re working insane hours as a salary employee your per-hour goes down significantly. Maybe when you see that, youll taper your stress a little
It is funny how there’s always so many technology and other initiatives to drive efficiencies blah blah blah.
End of the day we will always do work to meet an hour threshold predetermined in our heads. It’s dumb.
You guys need to switch firms. I work at a top 100 firm and we work 55 (rarely over) during busy season but we only work 28 billable during the off season. I make the same as my class mate that is at RSM and working almost double what I do.
Makes sense! And yes, it’s definitely a lot of hours and not healthy/sustainable. I did it for a couple years but I was single and in my 20s. If I had a long-term partner, I may not have done it for so long.
Sheesh, my busy weeks are 50 hours at most. I average about 40-45 total hours a week (including admin)
when I was in public, 60+ hour weeks were very common during busy season (of course, that was a million years ago, so we were onsite at the client M-F, and in the office on every Sat). Tho even now on the corporate side of things, there can be heavier weeks - 45-50 hours during regular month-ends and 50-55 hours during quarter-ends isn't unusual, and 60 hours is definitely possible during year-end (tho my company is great and lets us flex time to make up for working extra during close.
Generally 55-65 during busy season, only more when there’s an impending deadline or emergency. Rest of year is 40-45.
I have had plenty of 50-60 hour weeks and believe me, they were all very challenging. The worst week I had was when I was sick and still had deadlines to meet and still managed to work way more than I should have. I ran myself into the ground that weekend.
