You're looking for better opportunities.
Frame is as to why their firm is a better fit and less that you're trying to get away from your current firm. Maybe there's something well-known about your firm that you can use to simplify it. But best way to do it is taking emphasis away from why you would want to leave since it would cause them to focus on it less and they always want to see why you're specifically interested in them
Just say the organization's culture had been changing and it was no longer aligned with your values. You might be asked for an example, and I assume you could cite one. There are ways to talk about it without it sounding dramatic, just be factual and don't dwell on it. Most people would probably appreciate and respect your discretion.
Focus on what you like about the gig you’re interviewing for.
To explain the change, focus on yourself—“with a few years practicing under my belt, it seemed like a good time to explore my options,” etc.
Do not talk smack about the old firm. It’s just not the right way to make a first impression.
Bowl Leader
I would take whatever negatives and without saying it directly or speaking badly focusing on it being positives at the new firm. I’m excited to speak with you because I’ve heard great things about the strong leadership at your firm or something similar.
I agree with Counsel 1. I think that is a really great way to respond without throwing the company under the bus completely. Just try to be as straightforward as possible.
Don’t even mention it. It’s a red flag if a candidate talks bad about their formal employer. in interviews, always say things positively, you need career development, better opportunities, shorter commute, you heard good things about them, exciting projects etc… there are a lot to say
