Big4 senior 3 tax comps?
Hi all. I am trying to determine if I am being compensated fairly. I am a tax manager (about to start my second year as manager) and have been with EY since staff 1. I was promoted to manager in June 2020 (during covid) and received a 7.5% raise. The class above me has mentioned they received much higher raises during their promotion years. My base salary is now approx. 97K. Any insights would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

My raise from m-sm was 45%, same firm but received minimal raise prior year due to covid, and also they made some significant market adjustments to their SM range along with performance. Sm1-2 is going to be 20-25%, pending final sm ranges for this year. After that I'll be at the top of the sm range and it'll be COL in perpetuity or making partner.
Very high performer in tax at a Regional firm with a few hundred employees.
Our normal range in normal times has high performers / non promotion year at each level at 8-9%.
Our top SM pay range is relatively low compared to big regional firms, topping out at around $180k base with relatively small bonus opportunities - maybe another $10-20k a year if you hit the right projects. Solid MCOL area, so still a significant amount.
My 45% raise from M2-SM1 was a result of suppressed COVID raises for my second year as a manager - was still under $100k as a m2, add in performance/market adjustments, and it was big. Slung shot to above market for our area for a SM1. My 20-25% for SM2 is due to market/retention adjustments and some significantly increased responsibility I took on related to partner turnover - effectively I walked up to the plate and slammed it out of the park, and am getting recognition for it.
Not big4, but at RSM...it's about 5 or 6% for each year as a SM rated as doing great (4/5).
M2 —> SM1 11.4%
SM1 —> SM2 28.2%
SM2 —> D1 13.3%
Middle market
Yeah that was a covid raise, the following year corrected for it, and the promotion from SM to D would be more of a SM2 —> SM3 in a big 4 setting i would assume
Feel free to share the average $ amount of bonuses as well.
Interested in this as well. On a side note, that’s the raise firm M to SM?
