What's up with Norton Rose Fulbright? I notice that some folks there who are relatively junior (class of 2020 and 2021) already have the title "Counsel". Is the partnership track there different? I've generally heard that Counsel title is for people who are basically too senior to be associates but are not Partners, or are retired Partners.

I believe counsel there is off-track and senior counsel is bw associate and partner

Wow, I’m so out of the loop with these abbreviations

Counsel is a non-partner track role with below associate track compensation.

Confirmed counsel is typically off track from partnership. But some laterals start with a counsel role and shift to associate, some start out as an associate and shift to counsel if they aren’t getting promoted. Senior counsel is different depending on group, it can either be a stepping stone between sr associate & partner or a career non-partner senior attorney. (Worked there for a long time.)

I agree, I wouldn’t put much weight on that title as an interviewer. Counsel role varies from firm to firm

It can either be a staff attorney position with far below attorney compensation or for senior associates who are not making partner.

Generally in the past those who rise to senior associate and are not making partner have been given the Senior Counsel title, although there have been some rumblings about some changes to that practice.

What’s the first year NEP comp? When are folks typically promoted?

Yep!

Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?
