Thats because the people writing these job announcements have no idea what they are asking for.
I agree. Right now, I’m competing against graphic designers and struggling to find a job. It feels like companies want to replace people by expecting one person to do the work of two. I’ve started learning AI tools since many listings now require them. Have you noticed the same trend?
BTW it might help you- check out the “Graphic Designer” and “Art Director” titled job postings - 9/10 times they describe a job for UX Designers lol
Enthusiast
I’ve heard and seen stuff like someone leaves a company. Instead of hire a replacement, they spread that person’s responsibility to someone else or multiple people. Those people then become frustrated and leave.
Out of touch company then says “Let’s hire someone to replace Creative. They should have 5+ years in an agency, know Figma, be familiar with Canva, be excited about AI, be able to present and articulate their work, know motion graphics (Premier & After Effects), have some sort of illustration skills… the list goes on and on.
The issue is they now created an unrealistic role where the one person is doing the job of 2/3 people and they have to fill that void. You may as well freelance and be your own agency if you can do the job of an entire creative department. 😂
Writers have it easy. Fight me.
Hidden way of trying to get a Ux web designer by paying GD salaries
I just had an interview with a company I liked, where their job posting was indicating familiarity with 3D Software for mock ups (I have close to zero, but sent my resume anyway). Turned out, they don't really care about it, they just need the person they hire to be able to produce mockups for events in a presentation like Powerpoint, so their clients can have an understanding of the deliverables. They don't know how's it's done, they just want the results and wish for one person to be able to do most. Moral of the story - SEND THE CV, be sincere but confident. :)
Saturated applicant market. If you're confident in your abilities. Apply and explain you're willing to learn whatever would help them be more successful.
Subject Expert
Yea it's getting crazy, I feel like the list of tools you need to have expertise in nowadays is crazy for designers. I don't know how most people are supposed to keep up with the evergrowing list
5 years ago I had no issues finding work because I was conceptual but also good at animating, print, production, social, could direct on set, could lead and mentor juniors, put together decks and win client business….now all that seems useless because I don’t have more than basic experience Figma…none of the companies i’ve worked for in the past 10 years use Figma… i’ve done tutorials and have a willingness to learn, but that doesn’t seem to be enough. I can see why people are giving up on this career path.
I think 90% of jobs use Figma and ai now - in fact I got to get back to it (for digital creatives anyway). You can do everything between the two alone.
Agencies are looking for generalists. As they start to adopt AI, broader context of multiple disciplines will be more beneficial than specialization when filling roles.
Yeah, that's going to be the middle ground. Having qualitative knowledge leads to a broader understanding of application.
Hiring and retaining should reflect that sentiment.
I ever seen one posting where it's Graphic Design + Events Assistant + Marketing (3-in-1)
Pay was also probably $20/hr if it was in Canada LOL the posts out there are actually getting unhinged!
“I need an EXPERT to run my entire marketing department - we offer competitive salary!” (Offer is a dollar over min wage, BONUS: casual dress code)
I agree with you, it’s exhausting! I even got my UX certification thinking it would help but companies want more. It’s obvious some people just learn as they go if hired. Crazy!
GD has become equivalent to everything and anything under the Digital sun. I share your frustration. I've found that this means paying less than what they should be paying since a GD doesn't get paid as much as a UX/UI designer in most cases. The "wear multiple hats" ideal is becoming unsustainable.
