First conversation get an estimate of range they can realistically offer - make sure both sides are not wasting time. Make sure they know what your range is too if not a specific number that you will accept.
Continue to confirm through the process with recruiting and not the hiring team.
When the job is offered there should be no surprises at the number. You can negotiate higher in the range if they offer lower but come prepared with justifications why you are worth more so recruiting can reiterate to hiring team and comp teams for approval.
Transparency makes it 100x easier on both ends
100% agree! First convo is a really important piece
Without an offer there is nothing to negotiate, but salary should be part of the discussions before an offer is given. I wouldn’t go past an interview with the recruiter before at least knowing the salary range of the position and hopefully what the hiring manager has budgeted. If my expectations aren’t going to be met, it’s a waste of everyone’s time.
