Very curious to hear this. Sort of just did this myself
To me, it depends on what you want in your career. For example, if you want to become a fintech expert, stepping outside that domain could actually hurt your chances when applying for another fintech role.
It’s really hard to predict the opportunities and paths your career will take, so I believe one should focus on what they do best.
I’ve changed tech stacks multiple times throughout my career, and that flexibility helped when I transitioned into a more DevOps-oriented role, where having a bit of experience across different stacks was valuable. However, a few years ago, I returned to a more specialized IC role focused on a specific framework and domain. At that point, I felt I couldn’t fully leverage the breadth of my previous experience, which led to a lower overall impact.
It usually doesn’t hurt if the move is intentional. A short term step back to gain a strong skill set or domain can lead to faster growth later, especially when the story is clear and the impact follows.
