When applying to jobs, do you add a cover letter if it's an option and NOT a requirement?

I do only when I'm worried that my resume won't properly convey why I am an ideal candidate for the role. I'll also do it if I'm really excited about the position.

I have a standard cover letter that I include with every application. I figure, it won't get read most of the time, but on the off-chance that it matters, I want it to be there. But I definitely don't personalize it for every job. That would take an incredible amount of time.

like

You can but I honestly haven't seen a difference. I only add it if it's required.

I get more interest without cover letters.

No. Never. And still get the job

Yeah i've got kind of an unusual background so I always take the opportunity to include a cover letter if I can. I don't think you're ever hurting your chances by including a cover letter.

like

I have found it to depend on the situation. I would, if it feels as though you haven't conveyed your strengths, in the application. This is your chance to stand out.

Obviously the range of replies shows a significant difference in the exoeriences the reporting parties have had. For me, I'll include a custom cover for every application that will ask or accept one. Many recruiters say it doesn't matter in most cases, but it usually does not hurt if it is attached *IF* your resume is a bit generic or really isn't tailored or specific to the job. As a hiring manager I like to see a cover letter as it tends to serve to better demonstrat your fit for my team. Never not include one after it is requested.

I wouldn't recommend relying on job applications to get hired. Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of applicants, you're unlikely to even be noticed by recruiters. However, if you message employees on LinkedIn who work at each of your dream companies, share your admiration for the company, and ask them for advice on how to earn a job there, they may tell you to apply. In that case, I wouldn't attach a traditional cover letter, but do attach a disruptive cover letter, which focuses on:

1. Your connection story, or why you specifically admire this company's mission, values, products/services, etc., and how you came to learn about the company's value.

2. Your unique value add (UVA), which summarizes the problem(s) you enjoy solving for employers.

In this job market, resumes alone will not get you the job. Because of the high number of fake resumes in job applications, if you must apply, you have to validate (with your disruptive cover letter) that you are who you say you are.

I hope this helps!

I never submit one. Mostly because I never read them myself.

Yea I figure it would only help not hurt

Yes, I use it to explain things that don't fit in the resume.

Is there any advantage to telling a company you are interested in working for in the future where you decided to accept an offer from? Or does it not matter? I accepted an offer a week ago with a great company (Company A) that for this season in my life seems like a great fit and only strengthens what I have to offer company B down the road. Company B just sent me a request for interview and I want to keep the door open with Company B but they were just very late in extending an interview.

I was just informed after the third round of interviews they’d like at least 5 references, two must be supervisors. My last job was a temporary remote job where I didn’t really interact with my supervisor and the jobs before that were at my family’s business (I do not speak to any of them for serious personal reasons.) Anything before that was grad school and I haven’t kept in contact with any professors from over five years ago. What should I do? 😕
