I normally start high and work my way down to my midpoint.
You should tell them what you want and something you would actually accept. What’s the point of telling them what they wanna hear? To improve your odds of getting an offer you don’t want?
Aim high, so that when negotiating you'll end up happy either way. This is obviously only if you want the position.
If you have enough yoe, skills, relevant experiences and expertise, you should start higher. Be transparent about your target salary. You'll still go through negotiation so that's fine.
