And what if that job that pays less becomes just as stressful?
🥶🥶🥶
Work life balance is more of what you make of it rather than a pay scale. Personally, I see work as a life style, similar to fitness, and hobby. The better we get at it, the more challenge we want to have… and pay will follow. Taking on a less challenging job / less pay does not necessarily equate to a better work life balance.
How were you able to achieve this in your life?
Maybe, if you could negotiate for things like: more PTO than you have now, a more flexible schedule, a reduced work week, fully remote. Whatever would be personally meaningful to your sense of life balance. Some of these types of things can save you money too, so factor in those costs to see if your paycut is really a paycut. With a remote job, my family would not need to pay for after school care for my younger daughter--I'd be home when she got home from school. That's a cost savings. We could go down to one car. Another savings on gas, maintenance, etc. So a slight paycut would net us the same overall amount if certain other things were true about a job. These are more literal costs, of course. And I'm talking about a slight paycut. If you are looking at a more significant cut, you'd need to think about how it would affect your lifestyle and what you would need to give up in order to make it work. Hobbies, travel, kids' sports and activities, retirement contributions and savings? If those are things that give your life joy and meaning, then do you want to be in a position where you can't afford them? Is there anything you can do to find a better balance where you are? Might be worth pursuing in parallel to looking for a new opportunity.
I’m trying to set better boundaries at work now (like making working out a non negotiable even if I have a lot to do or I’m stressed. This has helped me tremendously make better sense of my work
