Schedule it in advance and take your vacation. Communicate early and frequently, put your out of office on and take time to recharge. I know-easier said than done and no guarantees that you will not have to work (hopefully only alittle to keep things moving).... Also don't be so responsive when you have your OOO on. Try it. It gets easier every year.
Yes! For example I know a few days and weeks I always take off every year and so when they come up no one can challenge me.
I take what my wife tells me to take my whole career, with the understanding that there are certain months we don’t touch and planned at least 3 months ahead. Normally take 3 to 4 weeks a year and a number of Friday’s off during the year.
Staff 2 here. I can’t help but acknowledge that this is such a toxic way of thinking. What’s the point of the firm trying to promote work life balance or even have classes on the purpose of life for that matter? Additionally, EY just rolled out the 2/3/4 month leave of absence program. Am I too naive to think that the firm actually cares about my personal health and well-being? I refuse to sacrifice my health over my career any day.
I’m all for taking one’s vacation. But i think you are naive to think the firm cares about your health in particular. In the current business climate, it’s wayyy better for the firms to offer LOAs when it’s slow to reduce payroll without reducing headcount for when things pick back up. Maybe I’m jaded, but that’s my take—the leaves are all about lowering expenses.
If your company doesn't have the capacity to ensure that everyone is taking their vacation, they are understaffed. If you don't take your vacation you are shorting yourself, time off is part of your compensation package.
12 years into my career and I take my vacation. Every year. And encourage my team and counselees to take their vacation. Don't let others bully you or make you feel you can't take it. If they do, report it. Stand up for yourself
SM here. Schedule your vacation and take it. It is part of your compensation and needed for your own sanity. Take charge of your your work / life balance, don’t be greedy and try and take 2 weeks off during busy season but in the summer take some time, schedule 3 or 4 day extended weekends, you can make it work just stand up for yourself. I know it’s not easy (and yes I’m guilty of losing vacation time myself in the past) but now I make sure I get my vacation time in after I realized I’m in charge of my own work life balance.
This Is dumb. Set boundaries and stick up for yourself.
Ive always taken all of my PTO. Everyone I know has. Whoever wrote that is either exaggerating or doesnt know how to set boundaries or plan in advance
I’ve taken all my PTO in my 10+ years in public. This is nonsense
It got more difficult the higher up I got. When I wanted to take vacation the illusive carrot was dangled a little harder.
All my vacations are doing the fall/winter months even before my EY days. Coming from the government sector, April through end of Octobee were state and federal grant close out, restart times so I had to be in office. Once I got out of that into private...I stuck with my fall/winter vacations but took more PTO than before throughout the year. Now with EY, same deal but I do take my laptop with me just in case for emergencies only and they understand I need to recharge and only reach out if someone else can't do it. In between...I will and continue to take mental health days to disconnect. More important now than ever with being home all day. Try to take one a month if possible.
I've been able to take 5 weeks of vacation a year. Can be done if you book it early. I always plan ahead. If you're below manager level, just look for open weeks in your calendar and ask for that time off. Also don't take off a lot of time during busy season!
