PE M&A get their own swag at my firm. Now that's power!

Our lit group is massive and what the firm is known for. But in my office, our M&A team is lean but bills a ton and they do whatever they want. They are very disconnected from the rest of the office.

Are they hiring?

It’s not group so much. There’s 4-6 individual partners firmwide split up between different practice groups that actually matter. The rest like to pretend that the title “partner” actually makes them special.

likefunny

Oh yup the switch when someone people get "partner" after their name is something else. Nevermind NEPs are basically glorified associates with all of the bad and none of the good, and at least as an associate at my firm you don't know if partners are equity or non equity

like

I'd say any group that gets big enough is gonna have dead weight, so my firm's real estate group probably has the most concentration of power given the high revenue generation for its relative size... it's small enough all the partners actually talk about promotion and discretionary bonuses for non partners so that's more of a unified front instead of associates angling to be the practice chair's pet associate

like

Define power. Like who brings in the most money or whose work is actually most important?

And I would imagine power also equals revenue or business generation source

Gov Con got the top floor of our new office building 🤷🏻‍♀️

Young solo here w/ a question about fees: 1. A local solo criminal defense attorney has offered to pay me to go and make appearances before the Court on some of her cases to make announcements. (For example, “ready when reached”). I’m open to doing this and this attorney is asking what my fee would be? Does anyone have thoughts or opinions on what a reasonable fee would be to do something like this? Hourly? Flat Fee? 2. I want to ensure this is ethical. I don’t see an issue with this. Thoughts?

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Do I need to be worried about getting fired for low hours?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Is it true that there’s a lot of 2-4 year lateraling in January?

I’ve been unsustainably swamped for months. Partner said they wanted to add an additional, more senior associate to the team on one massive case that went from “stayed” to “on fire” in the span of a month. I said that sounded awesome and the thought of someone else having to take on some responsibilities was such a relief… so why do I feel competitive and threatened now that the senior associate has actually been added? 🙄

Our SAs started today, so the firm is making us come in more often. My office set up is so awkward, screens are too small, and I'm constantly getting interrupted. Not to mention the extra time it took to get ready and commute. How do people do this?
