Age discrimination is a very real thing. Corporations and companies want young people who will work 60 hrs a week and will be yes people. They don't want seasoned professionals that will find gaps or risks and point them out. They don't want any push back. I've had to rethink how to make money so I can have peace of mind. I'm no longer the consumer I used to be and that's an amazing change. I hope you can find a way to get out of the corporate grind.
Same here. Have had some interviews with no call backs and I have 30 + yrs.
I feel age discrimination is the reason.
Ageism is definitely out there and I'm positive it's why I'm also having a hard time as well I'm 61 and it's hard to get an interview or past the interview. The last time I was unemployed I was in my 40's and some places didn't even bother to hide it. Now there's so much technology that filters out applicants and making it harder for everyone regardless of age.
I feel your pain, I have 30 years experience and no one wants to offer me a job, I don't understand it, but ok. Interviews go well, if I get call backs. Your told when your younger you need experience to land certain roles. Now I have the experience and no offers. Only time will tell
Same here. I believe the online application process has a lot to do with it as well. I'm 57 and I have put in so many applications it's crazy. I have had 3 interviews in two months. I think the computers pick from certain demographics. Age, experience, employment history, etc. If the computer doesn't pick you, you never get interviews. I never thought it would be hard to get a decent job. I don't want to work at McDonald's, but it's coming to that soon if something doesn't change.
Hello
I often do resume flipping. I remove things that set an employee seeking work in the trash can for resumes.
Example. Putting " I have over 35 years of experience in yaddah yaddah". Noooo do not do that on your resume.
What that tells the jaded recruiters is that you were born, you grew up, started working and you put in 35 years yaddah yaddah. Welp, you just aged yourself. If they are seeking 35 year olds and you say you have 35 years yaddah of expertise, it's cutting yourself short.
You just need to show on your resume A reasonable length of time in a certain career field. Do not say 25+ years etc. you want a chance to receive a call and get a chance to speak on the phone.
You want the cover letter to briefly explain your expertise but use matching words that are within the job description. That way, the robot screen the resume and cover letter and it finds it to be a match. You should receive a call
Never leave huge gaps on the resume, fill them in with strategyvlsude. " Was taking business courses while seeking work". Or fill gaps in with " assisting a family member during tough health days
It really works.
Make sure your resume is not going back to 1978 etc... it dates you in this job hunt jungle.
Go back 6 years but a short paragraph outlining other skill sets is a huge idea.
Ive also shrunk down my resume and dumbed myself down and taken off the years but it aint workin
Pro
Go in person to apply when possible
Mgrs don’t want to be bothered at work. It’s mostly online now a days
What kind of job are you looking for? Costco, security companies, and other places specifically look for experienced people.
Top-rated national employers include AARP, H&R Block, Home Depot, and UnitedHealth Group. Locally in the Twin Cities, Securian Financial and Ecolab are highly regarded for retaining experienced talent with strong pension and retirement programs.
I agree I’m in the same boat
Discrimination in hiring is always going to exist, whether it’s age, race, sexuality, etc. BUT we are currently experiencing a shortage of hiring jobs in the US. This is because of different factors, including (but not limited to) AI usage, ghost jobs, the average retiring age going up, and inflation. Instead of being angry at hiring managers and companies, please consider that they are receiving an insanely high influx of applications, and that everyone is desperate for a job. Apply to as many as you can and follow up! I personally don’t recommend showing up but following up with a phone call is always a great idea
I'm been applied all different kind job for 1 year and 4 months ....I think is about age. Cause I'm 60.
You still working?
Chief
It’s why I try as hard as I can to keep the job I have. I know my company is pretty loyal to its team but finding another job over 40 would be a nightmare.
Yes it’s real. We have to be more creative to compete with younger folks. Sometimes we have to find new industries that don’t particularly care. I switched from IT to aviation ten years ago. It did mean a pay cut and starting over. but well worth it. Difficult to prove a case of age discrimination. they just say you’re not a good fit.
Age dIcrimination is real .Your over qualified ,Your old in code .Happens to me a lot .Glad I can retire next year ,Job world is a circus ,Feel sorry for younger people that have to work for another 30-35 years .
I feel like i have to create my own job.
Im 34 and im having the same issue, Ive only had 4 jobs since i was 16, one main job and 3 side jobs to compliment it. Seems like a solid track record, i only left one of the jobs because they had a layoff i was part of and the main job for the whole duration, i havent gotten a callback for anything and ive even been doing a call after a week to verify they got the application.
Ageism. I’m living with it as well right now. How does it get proven?
Never thought I would say the same....after 18 years of experiences, but the reality hits harder these days.
Work for yourself or try something else...
The reason can be that companies wants to pay less and less and rather higher someone who have some experiences but doesn't matter how much they get paid:/ they usually say you are overqualified for the position:/
