I don’t get why people get surprised when someone else don’t like something. Like damit let others do what they wish. I got buddies who range from hating sushi to hating seasoning to hating avocado. Frankly people need to spend their energy on other things.
@PWC I wonder the same thing as well. There is lot of things that go into why a person doesn't eat /like something. Ppl make it out to be some bigger than it is.

Look up the word taboo... it’s not taboo, just a preference
Lettuce = raw, dead things.
I hate lettuce too!

You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.
Bc a lot of sushi doesn’t have raw fish and your assumption that ALL sushi is raw dead things is wrong and ignorant
I was almost gonna caveat with “Japanese sushi” coz I expected this comment. But I guess I should have spelled it out for an American audience.
You must be white
I’m black. I know plenty of folks who hate sushi. Including my parents. Race has nothing to do with food preference.
It is definitely an acquired taste. I was somebody like you for quite some time. Didn't really think about eating raw fish or even lobster/octopus for that matter. That whole sea food section turned me off. But after having some really high quality sushi from a Michelin restaurant that did change my thoughts about sushi. But hey if you don't like it you don't need to justify to anyone. You do you man and tell others to respect your preference:)
D2 totally ! I know so many people who cannot stand or eat Indian food because oh it's so spicy. Now is that not an acquired taste for some people versus others?
If it’s any consolation, I’ve seen eyes pop when I tell people I don’t like tiramisu. Never had a tooth for dairy-sweet, always preferred the fruity-sweet type of dessert.
Yes, it’s a pretty common reaction among many of my fellow American brethren. We seem to like our desserts creamy, strong and sweet. However, I found quite a few kindered spirits and alternative desert choices in Europe and Asia, much to my delight.
I am laughing to myself....a former vegan exec I know ate meat so he could get his million dollar deal through...he didn’t want to offend during a the dinner...
My friend ate a weird animal to get an IB job out of B school! Not surprised!
If you hate any food it should be taboo.
All food is good when made correctly. Preferences are bs
What drives me up the wall the most though is people who are afraid of their food. You know, the type that eats hockey puck burgers and bone dry pork loin because it's not cooked enough when there's pink (It's perfectly safe). Some meats need to be served below well done, such as duck and squab. Don't get me started on people that go to an expensive steakhouse and expect their steak to be served hot (e.g. unrested)
Duck has to be served well-done? No bro, no.
It’s ok to not like something. Do you not like sushi because you’ve given it a fair shot and after trying it several times still don’t like it? Or have you never really tried it and just think the idea of it is gross? If the latter, then the negative reactions may be because it shows a level of closed-mindedness and culinary ignorance.
If you think sushi is just "dead raw things" there's a lot of sushi you can still explore that isn't raw.
Also, dead and raw may not be that bad of a thing, raw foods are eaten around the world: steak tartare, ceviche, kibbee, rare steaks, etc. Plus, it's not like there is anything that's "alive and cooked" on any menu.
At the end of the day, it's ok for you to do you. More sushi for the rest of us!

Exactly!
There are cooked sushi options or vegetarian options. You can dislike raw sushi but maybe you would like the other options? Hating them all is fine too
I am with you
OP, people are surprised because most people seem to like sushi. I LOVE sushi, like get up at 4am to wait in line at the Tsukiji market love sushi, but if you don’t, whatever. We’re surprised because it’s just ... different. I know people that don’t like chocolate, and had the same reaction, but at the end of the day it’s just a preference and that’s ok.
I always found it weird when people got all twisted because of another person's dietary choices. By twisted, I don't mean genuinely surprised.
A person prefers their steak above medium-rare? Ppl go crazy... Why do you care? They don't eat Sushi (any form)? Why do you care? They don't eat pork. Why do you care? They don't drink? Why make it a big deal?
Aren't there better things for people to focus on?

It's just a preference. I love every type of sushi, my wife hates every type of sushi except for California rolls, and even those are way, waaaay down her food preference list.
On the flip side, she loves both tofu and lima beans, two foods that I really don't like.
It's just a preference, nothing wrong with liking or disliking a particular type of food.
