I’ve asked the following:
What is your management style
How are assignments given
What’s the formal or informal review process
Will I be working independently with a partner or will I be on a team of associates
When is the last time the firm or office gathered together that was not case related (culture fit)
What are your diversity initiatives
What does a good associate look like to you
How will I be trained upon entry, what does that look like?
Ask how client facing you’ll be initially and how the firm plans to support your growth in that area.
I ask about pay and hours directly. If they avoid the question, then there’s either a lack of transparency or they are trying to hide something. I did it with the partners of the firm I’m at, the partner was blunt, and I haven’t been disappointed. Of course, I don’t ask for their salaries or anything like that. But I ask about associate salary ranges, hours expectations, out of office events, and so forth
If you will be working for one or two partners only, ask if you can meet them. Sometimes they hide the nastiest ones away during the interview process (and don’t tell you who the name of who you’ll be working with so you can’t ask around) and then stick you with them once you start.
If you aren’t working directly with the managing partner, I’d use this opportunity to ask questions about the firms culture, diversity initiatives, and goals (i.e., practice area growth, training programs, technology initiatives). If they’ve been at the firm for a long time, ask what’s made them stay and what are they excited about for the future of the firm.
Hours and bonus for sure - if the MP dodges this question saying HR will get back to you on that that’s a red flag for me
