With all the recent changes in our industry—AI tools, automation, shifting client expectations—I’ve been feeling the pressure to level up. I’ve been in account management for 6 years, and while experience matters, I’m starting to worry it’s not enough to stay competitive. I’ve looked into courses on strategic client management and digital marketing, but I’m not sure what’s actually worth the time and money. Have any of you invested in certifications or training that really paid off? How do you stay sharp and relevant in a role that’s constantly evolving?

Is there such thing as a true account role at major branding agencies? Ex. Interbrand, Landor, Pentagram...Sounds like in many cases it’s actually just PM under a different name.

Who else started with small businesses and moved up to medium and large at agencies structured to handle it? I handle 40 clients and some 60 Content managers, ad managers, designers, developers, and a smattering of other positions.

Which was better? I have almost complete autonomy over what happens with small biz, but getting to focus on projects for more than an hour/month sounds nice.

How often do scopes change? I thought it was normally on an annual basis with some exceptions but my CD is telling me they change constantly. Someone educate me…

What are key questions to ask a sitting account team during an interview to better assess how great or terrible their current clients and/or projects are?

I work for a small agency and manage our internal marketing acct. We had very few processes in place when I started. I’ve since created, implemented, and trained our dept. on project mgmt for clients and am trying to convince the owner to apply those principles to our internal jobs. They are resistant because they just want the work to be done and don’t “want to keep spending money on internal jobs”. I’m confused because we’re doing the work either way and “spending” in labor/resources.

"You are one of two candidates in the final round.

I got a promotion a year and 3 months ago, and got a pay raise 5 months ago. Could I still ask for a promotion to SAE if I have been supporting a team more as one? Promotions are hard to stab with.
