Our job won't be obsolete any time soon. There are too many nuances, and AI just isn't there yet. I believe it's one of those positions that won't be replaced by AI, but assistants who don't use AI to the fullest will be replaced. If anything, I think it will free up a lot of time by processing basic tasks, and the AA/EA role will evolve to involve more strategic tasks that a chief of staff, for example, would typically do.
This is my best case scenario. I worry but then I tell myself I can future-proof myself by becoming AI-savvy
I just finished an entire course on AI and I think if people understood its limitations, they wouldn’t be super worried at this point. Think of the people you are assisting and the new skills they would have to develop, at bare minimum the new software / app they’d have to learn and use to replace you. Depending on their schedule and other factors, they won’t. Right now it is a useful tool for doing your job more efficiently. I feel like we aren’t super close to execs being able to give AI instructions like an administrator “book my travel for next week” and have it know all the nuances that go with it.
This 100%
I think there's no true replacement for our role. And I think and hope that those who really utilize and recognize that will only ever trust the human attention to it. It's like having AI know ahead of time that your exec or team has a birthday coming up and they've been obsessing over naked cakes that month or that your boss is always late for appointments when coming from a social meeting as opposed to a business meeting. Both of which, unless you teach the AI to learn, wouldn't know.
True that. However, with the way the advancements happen in leaps and bounds, it isn't unreasonable to assume all these can be very quickly taught to and taken over by AI. Who's to say there won't be an AI EA that can be purchased/subscribed to and trained in personal preferences and nuances.🤷🏽♀️
Embrace AI and use it to your advantage. Try to see how it can help you improve your role.
The only ones that will have trouble are the ones refusing to use it.
I’ll add that I’ve had the chance to utilize copilot (the new Office equivalent to ChatGPT) but a lot more secure. It focused on Microsoft programs. As an office manager, I’ve used to to create PPT presentations of a word template of notes, it can summarize teams meetings and also re-tailor emails to make them more professional.
I’m really looking forward to the excel functions and creating formulas and data sets a lot easier.
I was job hunting from May to October. The firm I was using from my prior company had software to see if the roles I was looking at could be obsolete in the next 5 years. Many had a high probability. The counselor advised me against such roles. Well I am happily employed again. If I had taken that advice, I would still would home.
Oh wow...
Thank Goodness you believed in yourself!
