Yes
I would probably jump as long as you like the new role. An actual offer is better than an uncertain chance at promotion, especially when your raise might not be as large as the new offer
Don’t jump. Your market value increase a lot with a SM title from a known consulting firm. Also think of potential salary jump over the years to come. Corporate increase is not as much. If you leave as a manager ever want to come back to consulting industry, you might have to start as a manager again. Depends on your priority and how determined you’re to leave consulting.
Potentially yes. If I didn’t think the exit at SM was significantly better; I would jump.
Which option do you think you would be happy with in 5 years? If the exit opportunity isn't what you think it is, do you have the opportunity to boomerang back and move on to another company or would you be stuck? Do you are yourself staying in consulting? What would be your next move after a SM position? Are you staying in consulting because it is "safe" or because it is the better option?
If you're the type of person who is thinking they could stay in consulting long enough to make partner, I don't think you're the type of person who would be okay with a narrower role with slower career progression / control / salary growth.
Just my 2 cents.
You had me at “exit”
Let's say in 6 to 7 months you don't get the SM role, what then? Will you have regrets? Lets flip it, if you go and hate it after 6 to 7, will said 2 partners still be willing to have you back?
jump
Jump. Upsides on D side are minimal to the upsides you mentioned.
A Bit more context - appreciate all your feedbacks: SM was „promised“ by two partner - so quite substantial I guess... new role is interesting but a specific field of my industry (a bit narrow - not the typical path to board level) and in a quite insignificant country for the corporation (think small country - not at HQ) .. would this tip the scales?
I think you should treat the potential promotion the same as getting a new offer: if you don’t have the offer letter and a start date, it doesn’t exist. A verbal promise is still no good until it actually materializes. Anything crazy could happen and they may have to go back on their “word”
Also: position would be no leadership position in terms of team etc
What are YOUR pros and cons to each situation? What are YOUR top prioritizes?
My biggest priority is WLB balance, so if I was good on the role, I would jump at that opportunity. And the 30% increase over an M salary would just be the cherry and whipped cream on top.
Its hard - I m struggling with the decision a lot ...
My pro: good exit, reputable company, good salary and increased WLB, proper step in terms of level and future levels
My cons: narrow role in an insignificant country where the shots are made elsewhere, stuck in a niche (albeit a very lucrative and profitable niche), no leadership position (at least no direct reports), no way to board etc
Which company?

Do you want to keep growing after SM or not?
That's the question. Wage is already generous, so... Up to you.
I did exactly that earlier this year.
Oh... but I totally did not burn bridges. I told them it was a gamble and risk for me and spent a good 2 months socializing my exit in person to all my old leaders. When asked if I’d accept a counter offer I said “I don’t want to insult you with rejecting an offer, but if I get fired in a year you’ll be the first I call.”
