Ditto. I’m a senior attorney and I still get rattled multiple times a week. Our job takes a lot of self-confidence and some days I really feel like I’m faking it. I don’t have a good answer for you but I did want to say that you are very much not alone.
That’s why they call it the practice of law. Nobody knows what they are doing
Exactly it's a practise.
It took me until my 5th year before I felt comfortable being mostly independent in my practice. At year 7 now and the expectation is that I handle my matters independently but I still ask my boss and team for help and advice all the time.
I saw someone recently say you should get imposter syndrome every year because it means you just leveled up. I keep that in mind now, and still get it after ten years of practice.
I think that's normal at your level. Over the next two years, you will likely (a) overcome some of that feeling with increased skill and experience, (b) be more comfortable with that feeling, knowing that you do have sufficient competence as an attorney, and (c) get better at figuring things out when you encounter something new.
Don’t feel bad about the imposter syndrome. For me, time in service has helped. It took about 5 years for me to get comfortable and confident with my advice.
