Kind souls of Google,
Would you be kind enough to refer me to a role at Google!
Came across a role that's a good fit.
Would ideally like to target it through a referral and not by applying through the career site.
Would also love to maybe take you for a meal or alike to thank you for it.

I think it helps. It’s not about political games and manoeuvres, but to share a little with your co workers and manager is a great way to build good relationships.
It can help, but it shouldn't be necessary for advancement. I don't have much in common with most of my colleagues, and I don't think it's hampered my career at all. At the end of the day, job performance is the only criteria that matters.
I not completly agree with your last comment ;) job performance is not the only critetia. Have good relationships with the bosses and stay in their « good books » is (infortunayely) a big part. It’s my own experience.
To bad the answer is yes guys fall back on sports, when they can't fall on moving forward.
Being a human is difficult?
At a previous job, the men on one team had a fantasy football league that included vendors and teaming partners, and they even went out for dinners for their draft. Zero women were included. There are gals on our team that are lifelong NFL and college fans, but they weren't even invited.
Not necessarily but it never hurts to try to find some common ground with your colleagues outside of work related topics. Maybe there are other hobbies or interests you can bond over, or maybe you can find ways to connect on a more personal level beyond just the office chatter.
