Why would someone who’s proficient in 1 or more programming languages take a job as a consultant? Are there any key benefits as opposed to going into software engineering or a dev role internally?

I negotiated up to 85k which is around 16% increase and they said that is the highest they could go. They added that you do get equity after 6 months but it isn't in the offer letter.
