I would tell you to get the cash in salary or get the equity in writing otherwise it’s worthless and also remember it’s only worth something if the company is worth something.
Dude you’re 23 years old and about to pull 85k. You’re waaaaaay ahead of the curve
Everything we do is for money don’t buy into the whole learning garbage.
Confirm that you are eligible for the equity plan and ask for the details by email. It doesn’t have to be in the offer letter. And keep in mind that the overall value to your career is more than money, it’s experience. If it’s something you want to do, don’t focus on the financials to the exclusion of everything else. If it doesn’t work out, you can always go back to SAP work
Another thing to consider: if they put you at the top of the range for your role at $85K, you might not see much in raises until you get promoted, which could be slower process in a start up. I’d make sure you’re asking about next 1-3 years and taking that into account.
If you don’t have 2 years at a larger firm you could be hurting yourself in the long run. I made that mistake and it took a couple years back in a larger firm before I started getting the real money. I was 26 making 110k in security. Get a name under your belt before going to startup route. Trust me
12k will come down to like $300 per paycheck so definitely don't let money be a primary deciding factor.
70% tax. Are you in Canada?! More like 500-700 net
Take the job. There’s no benefit in sticking around at a lower salary doing a job you don’t like. What becomes of your role will be driven by what you put into it - learn, stay focused, opportunities will arise. As for the equity piece, ask the company to confirm eligibility requirements so that you know and understand what it takes to collect. Enjoy and good luck.
Thanks for the replies.
@ey1/2 yea I'm definitely going to try and get it in some sort of writing. If they avoid that, will an ultimatum eg "I can only accept if equity is in writing" recommended or just evaluate the offer with 0 equity to not sound greedy?
@acc1 there's no real "range" for my role because it's a start up. They said because of that, I could definitely move around (I really want to do product management in the future) and I spoke to someone who did exactly that internally. The recruiter did say progression is a lot faster( they've grown from 7->120 ppl in a year and plan to grow to 500) but all of the above is just talk for now.
One thing to note is that I'm currently at a smaller consulting firm so I would like to get a big name in the future but I'm guessing the move won't hurt in this case? They also just threw me a non-compete for 2 years after termination so definitely reconsidering now.
Non-compete are shit in most states.
