Nicely done!!!!!
What country did you start your career in the Big4?
And what LoS have you worked throughout?
@OP, may I ask what area of consulting you have been working in and what attracted you to do this?
I'm currently qualifying for an ACA and considering a switch in the near future, as accountancy feels quite draining most of the time, and there's v low pay, so very curious about your input
I have an MBA and 21 years experience and I just got to 100k I would love to know what jobs are paying more
This is awesome. Did you stay in consulting and same firm the entire time? Look like the last 8 years you’ve had really good pay bumps every year!
Same firm once I moved from B4 to T2
What are the levels/titles along the way?
Not able to edit the post to add titles. But made Partner in 2022.
Way to kill it! Have to ask- how’s the WLB for you?
It’s okay. Has changed a lot over the years. In my more junior years, it was the hours. Now it’s less about the hours and more about making sure there is enough work in the pipeline. It’s a different type of stress. I will say that the flexibility has certainly improved over the years.
The other difference is that as a Junior, I’d work my ass off but then peace out over two weeks of vacation. I can’t do that anymore. Feel like I always have to be on.
What year was first year partner? 2022?
May be he/she was an MD in 2021!
2012 -$167k to 2014-$74k must have been painful. how did you motivate yourself? also what MBA did you do to jump from $74k to $220k. How did you negotiate that
That just represents pay for part of the year since I was at school for most of the year. Rate of pay was much higher. $220K the following year represented full year TC.
I did an accelerated 1 Year MBA at one of the top five schools
Great job !
Just curious how can one pursue towards the career of consulting?
That’s awesome! What’s your age and NW?
Net worth includes spouse’s savings /investments. I’d say about 60% of that would have been my contribution.
We do live below our means - modest townhome in a HCOL city, no fancy cars. We did spend on travel (before COVID) happened.
Any advice for a senior associate?
Can’t speak to the accounting profession as I am not familiar with the day to day operations there, but from a consulting perspective:
1) Take ownership and deliver quality - for all the work on your plate, assume there are no layers between you and the client. Ask yourself every time, if the quality of work is client ready. Would you pay for the work? Have you looked at the details carefully - is everything accurate
2) Story Telling - Learn the art of telling a story that is fit for your audience. What is the audience here to learn? Why is it important to them? Is the message simplified enough
3) Learn to go above and beyond - Raise your hand for things beyond your immediate project role. Push to play a stretch role (and then ensure you deliver). Sign up to help with business development, thought leadership, recruiting etc.
4) Teach - your peers and your juniors. This is an apprentice model. Develop individuals who have your skill sets
5) Content - Strive to be an expert in your chosen area of focus. It pays to get deep into how things work (but also remember to come out of the weeds to tell the right story - point #2)
There are others. But if you do the things above, you’ll set yourself up well.
B4 paid 29k in 2008??? I know it’s non US but that’s insane for any first world country
Certainly not. If I recall correctly, the starting pay for B4 in the US at the time was about 58K. So not that unusual comparatively
Singapore?
Not discussing specific countries
What was your role in 2021? MD or Director?
The equivalent of an Associate Partner. We use a different title at my firm.
