The answer to this question is always, always, always the same: make them give the first number. If they push you on salary, say something like this:
"my required salary for my next role will depend on a number of factors and I will evaluate the entire package when considering an offer. What is the range you are thinking for the role?".
Always, always, always do this. It's weird and it feels awkward, but do it politely and you will do yourself a long term career favor.

^^ with all due respect to S&S, this is not good advice. Imagine that you are currently on 60k and they are planning on hiring around 90k. You throw out the number you want, let's say 70k. They offer you it and save 20k.
Every employer has a range they are budgeting for a role. First rule of negotiating is you almost always let them throw out the first number. It feels weird and awkward, and some recruiters will push hard, but by giving them a number you put yourself in a weaker position.

You never let them throw out a number first. Know your worth. Three years is not much. That’s Media Planner status. Even in NYC it’s going to still be low, but NO harm in saying the minimum it would take for you to accept the job. Factor in rent, taxes, met card, etc. go from there
