3 years into practicing and so burnt out wondering if I even want to practice law. Taking a couple months to reset and will be searching for a job in the interim. Thankful for the off time but not sure what’s next.

In my third year and I’m already planning my great escape. You’re not alone. Someone told me to get a career coach, which I’m trying to find. That might be a good option.

I know a good career coach that works with a lot of lawyers transitioning out depending your market. I’m a former lawyer myself. Feel free to DM me if interested

Been there, done that! I love the law and helping people but the job was not what I wanted. I ended up starting a legal resource brokerage. I help a lot of people and make much better money but do not have to do the tedious part of the job!

A client pays a monthly membership fee and is entitled to unlimited legal advice and the vast majority of legal work for the price of their membership (filing fees are not covered and for a small number of issues they receive at 25% discount off rates). Pretty cool service and I have a lot of employers who offer what my services as an employee benefit.

OP, how has the time off/job search been going?

I took 3 weeks and found a job during that time. Switched from litigation to (mostly) corporate and working from home 3 days a week. I don’t want to jinx it but it’s going really well so far.

How did you know you were ready to leave the law, even if it was just leaving a law firm?

Just gave notice to my managing partner. I have no job lined up. I have no plan. I have no idea what the next step for me is. But I’m feeling so relieved and can’t wait to see what’s next in store for me. I know it won’t be at a law firm.

I’ve worked the last nine years for my state legislature as an attorney analyst, drafting and analyzing proposed legislation. I’ve primarily worked on health professional regulations. Next year, I will apply for student loans forgiveness under the public service program and would like a change. I know others who have gone into lobbying/government relations, but I would like to find other options to pursue. I’ve never done billable work so not sure if law firm life is for me. Any suggestions?

If you’ve decided you just don’t like practicing law, especially after several jobs, what have you done to leave? Do you feel compelled to use your JD in some way because, “well, I already got it”? Or are you okay moving in an entirely new direction?
I’m thinking of starting a new business unrelated to law. The JD and practice experience will obviously come in handy with typical business management issues like negotiating and enforcing contracts, basic HR issues, etc. (Cont. in comments)

I feel like I’ve screwed up any chance for happiness by going into the law. I hate the law firm culture. It’s made me so depressed. But I can’t find time or energy to network or develop skills that could land me a non-law job with decent pay (I have student loans). It seems like the only options for getting out of the law are to become a career coach or a recruiter, which I don’t want to do. Can anyone share a success story to give me hope?
