@OP left as a Senior 1, returned as a Manager 1. I was unfairly dinged by jobs as not having more recent SOX exposure because when I left B4 I worked a number of non public company jobs like regular accounting manager role. When I wanted to pivot into more promising companies or F500 roles, I kind of felt the screeners and recruiters screened me out.
Most of the people I interviewed with at roles at top notch companies like say Amazon, Facebook, and to a lesser extent Google all were manager or senior manager exits out of B4 - some of those were clients of those people, so it really does show if you get to manager or senior manager you can start having that conversation with say your partners or counselors and just be candid that you want an exit. You have put in enough time to know what's best for you at that point.
But back to the interviews, I think I was really looked down upon by the B4 alumni interviewers for going to non prominent companies and being out of public for several years. It felt like borderline discrimination because I can clearly do the work, but I just didn't have the neatly bow tied perfect background on paper.
The next time around I had some soul searching and now I am in a role that will be my career job at a level that I'll be content at for a number of years.
I think what we have in common in is while I am technical, I enjoyed the operational side so I wanted to make sure to land somewhere where I could dabble more in corporate FP&A too. I'm finally running the financial model and sort of overseeing a portion of the revenue team. The revenue side is technical enough (don't get into detail revenue work like being a revenue analyst looking at contracts it sucks) at a high level without getting too bogged down with the mundane and I enjoy facilitating and driving company strategy and success on the finance side.
The more recent exposure to ASC 606 and SOX as it pertains to the new revenue pronouncement were some key points to win the job.
But really, I should have stopped doing mundane accounting and public.. and have done FP&A right off the bat. I didn't have the wealth of information on the internet when I first started in the career like everybody does now. People were not doing deep dives into the B4 or sharing career tips.
Hope that gives some good information. For those of us who don't want to do IA or GL work, FP&A might be a good middle road to go down so we are not stuck doing SEC or technical accounting work in industry.
It's harder to find a job as manager.
I’m a manager and I’m looking to exit and it’s roughhhh. It’s been difficult to pivot into finance (which I wasn’t expecting). Everyone wants you to start in compliance and then pivot once you’re in. No thanks.
I'm a manager and trying to see what else I can do outside of accounting. Might have to take a title cut.
If giving up one more year of work/life balance could bring changes totally worth the sacrifice. My fear is if I stayed till manager I’d get pigeonholed into technical accounting and Financial reporting. Thoughts?
If you're going the purely operational route then it makes sense to just exit now.
Generally speaking though, having more public accounting experience doesn't hurt as bad people make it out to be. Quite often it's more of a problem to not have enough Big 4 experience.
It's what spurred my own boomerang back into B4 and back out now in the role I always wanted to do. I had plenty of operational experience.. just needed a hair more Big 4.
@Finance Director 1 - Fantastic insight! Thanks for sharing.
@FD1 - thanks for sharing - why did you need to get back to big 4 for your current role? At what level did you leave?
