4th year big law associate here, trying to make the move to in-house. Spoke to a recruiter about a temp in house role in my field, but recruiter urged me to really think about giving up my permanent position for a temp position. My thought is I’m very unhappy in my current role and would love to do something with more balance and get in house experience under my belt to make me a more attractive candidate. Is this a bad move? Anyone try contract work to land a permanent position?

Imagine that --- an ethical recruiter. Jokes aside, don't leave a permanent job for a temporary job ever. Your firm experience is perceived to be much more valuable than any temp in-house gig can be.

Stay away from contract work unless they give you something in writing that it will go perm. A lot of times, you get on a temp position and as the work slows down they let you go.

Do you all still feel that way even though I’m considering quitting without another role anyway? My mental health is trash and gearing up toward quitting by May if nothing comes to fruition before that.

If you have enough financial cushion to buy you some time to rest and apply to jobs later, resignation isn’t all that bad. But be realistic about your target firms or companies and how your marketability can be affected. 3 months or so of break won’t affect you much, in general. Good brand names and experience can get you a decent job.

I would try and find out if this is a temp role for a specific project/ to cover someone’s leave. Or if this is a temp role because they really need to expand the legal team and haven’t gotten a full time hire approved yet. If they really want someone full time eventually it could be a great opportunity for you to really impress the legal team and the business enough that they find a permanent role for you. If it’s a specific project or leave coverage I’d stay away.

I wouldn’t leave a full time position for a temp in-house. Way too risky. After you do your part and things slow down — they could easily clean house of temps.

Have you considered talking to your current firm? Would they agree to a sabbatical or some other arrangement?

I have not but I am just shy of a year and unlikely something they will consider unless legally obligated like an fmla leave which I don’t qualify for.

Don’t go temp if you have a permanent position. You may also not have as much balance as you think. My wife and I are both in-house and work more than ever before.

Your firm may have some opportunities to do a secondment, and that is often a good way to both “try before you buy” and get your foot in the door at a company, without the risk of being unemployed at the end of the arrangement, or having any stigma attached to it.

Looking for guidance. I’ve been in people manager roles (in director/senior leader capacity) for the last 5 years now, and prior to that I was a “rockstar” Project Manager. I’ve worked really hard to get to the position I’m in today, but I’ve been recently asked to move from my current role to a senior IC role to take on a highly visible Program for the company, with some very senior stakeholders. I feel conflicted as it does feel like I would be backtracking in many ways. Thoughts?

Career dev advice needed. Being offered a promotion (would be reporting to my current skip and managing/growing a team). The role is global subsidiary management/governance. But the work does not appeal to me, I’ve been doing some of it and it’s so much admin and people management. I’m not practicing law at all. Love my current IC role and manager, get to work on strategic transactions and closer to the business. If my goal is head of corp legal one day, should I suck it up and go for it? Thnx!

What law firm is your favorite for run of the mill employment issues in the US and internationally (India, Australia, UK, Germany, etc.). So, who are you using and are you happy?

Not sure whether it’s appropriate to request time off for a new job (I would’ve preferred not to take any time off for first three months). Any thoughts on whether I should proceed with the request? I just came from big law and want to make sure I’m not making a bad impression on my colleagues.
