Unemployment "benefits" are laughable. I'm one year in, but have been fortunate about dual income (even though I was breadwinner by a lot). I also had to sell a lot of valuable items.
Here's some tips you may be doing already but worth mentioning:
Keep working your network. Before you apply, look at the company and see who you know there. I have been applying so much but the only way I've been getting interviews is when I ping someone to refer me internally. As someone who used to hire, I can almost 100% guarantee no one is looking through cold applications.
Show up on LI to stay top of mind. But don't just post about looking for a job. Start to create a personal brand for yourself there. Talk about things you're passionate about. You'll be seen by those you know, and if they engage with your posts - their network will see it too.
Take a break when you need to. For your own mental health.
Please help / support / share advice for this colleague. My heart goes out to…
I know what you’re saying. I had to borrow from my mom to keep from being evicted. I can’t even scrape up enough to file bankruptcy. I’m about $130,000 in debt. And that’s not including my car and some student loans. Unemployment is indeed a joke. I’m single with two kids to feed. Thankfully I’m working a contract now and there’s hope of getting converted, but I’m scared to count on that.
OK LISTEN!!! I know this is hard, but know that this is not all that life is going to give you, things ARE going to get batter. Who cares about debt, I have had a bunch of it and honestly no longer care about that, just focus on what you can control. I am not sure what you do, but have you thought about trying freelance work? Try going month to month on lease if you can. Also if you don't have kids or pets can you live with someone at half the cost? I have a large dog and it's difficult with her.
Anyway try this place also great for talking for mentors and getting advice plus just meeting new people https://app.adplist.org
