A coworker just got a massive retention bonus. Like, buy a car in cash massive. I smiled, said congrats, and meant it… mostly. But now I’m spiraling. We’re at the same level, same tenure, and I’m sitting here wondering what I did wrong. I want to be happy for them, but I can’t shake the “why not me?” feeling. How do you deal with comp envy when someone else gets a windfall?

You don’t. You use it as fuel. Next time comp comes up, you walk in with receipts and fire in your belly.

This. But they’ll probably brush it off

They likely did two things. Of course proved value that they could make more elsewhere and their value at your company is worth retaining. But more important at some point they advocated for themselves verbally to management. Likely in advance said I’m worth X and need this to stay or brought a counter offer.

Working hard and performing silently without advocating for yourself will very rarely be rewarded beyond receiving good performance reviews and moderate comp increases. You have to advocate for yourself verbally. And back it up with performance.

They probably had another offer on the table. Or their role is a complete pain to backfill. Or they just advocated for themselves and got rewarded for it. Whatever the case may be, it's no reflection on you or your value.

That’s typically when I see this. Plus if OP isn’t as good as AP then clearly there is nothing to retain.

Ask them what they did and copy that for next year.

Probably we’re going to quit and got money waived in their face

See their work ethic and what they did. Did they try to overachieve in their role or maybe got another job offer?

That’s when you walk in a slap it on the table. Or just start applying for jobs on the clock lol

Use it to spark a discussion with your manager and ask what you need to do to get a similar bonus.

COO’s & previous SR. account executives…

I made it to regional manager for a franchise by age 22. Ran a successful financial practice & sold by the age of 33. Took 2 years off and built a health & wellness coaching platform for my wife (medical provider). Then, the last 2.5 yrs, have been a top producer in Saas sales as a senior account executive. I’ve been told I would make a great COO someday and I’m ready to take the next step into leadership. Who/what should I be targeting next?

Maxed out Roth IRA contributions when I wasn't eligible for 2021 (got a salary bump mid year). Do I need to recharacterize? It's a very small account that's been open for only two years. That's the only IRA account I own. Do I need to open a traditional IRA and roll over 6k + realized gains into that account and keep the Roth IRA. So confused how this works and got conflicting information from Merrill.

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I’ve been with the company 8.5 years & am the only one in my role, which they can’t operate without. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.

Is anybody here a notary? And how much are you making from that? Is it a potential side-hustle?

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?
