This is also one of the reasons why some citizens of our country feel like they are entitled to everything. Others don't know the real value of sacrifice for liberty and freedom that's why they act like the are entitled to everything.
Unfortunately, it's just the reality of being a small nation surrounded by much larger and hostile neighbors. Everyone is needed
Still, there are many countries where you can typically get out of it with some lame excuse, or most men are not actually serving for one reason or another. For instance in Norway, the number of motivated volunteers exceeds the quotas set by the government, so usually, there isn't a need to force people. But it can happen, and they have every right to force you to serve if they want to.
I am also thankful. But I also feel sorry for the citizens of other countries.
MIC1 has a point. I also noticed or even heard some people faking illnesses or making up excuses to avoid serving. I know it is a call of duty but I feel bad for them since they have no choice at all.
