Question: who determines that they aren’t ready? A CD once told me if you can check off everything in the job description, you’re just making a lateral move. Yes, there are key experiences you need to have, but it also needs to offer opportunities to grow.
A former agency told me I wasn’t ready to be a CD. I left and found the opportunity somewhere else.
I was told I didn’t have the right experience to do UX design. Fast forward 10 years and I’m leading my own UX team and teaching UX at a university.
This is an interesting point...to me, I don't think you have to be PERFECT for the next step up before moving. The whole point is to recognise potential and reward that. If someone isn't getting promoted, to me that means they have some kind of expectation (e.g., how you handle situations, how much you rely on the manager) etc that they aren't communicating...which really isn't right or good management
