Depends on the state. NY, yes. Random red state, probably not.
Never ever tell the recruiter your current salary because they will use it to lowball you.
“Can you let me know the salary range for this role and we can start from there”
Unless you know your current salary is higher than what they would probably offer
Add 15% and then tell them
Only in certain locations such as CA - most places in the US it is still legal
My standard response is salary is company confidential information and I do not feel comfortable sharing.
I’m with C1 on telling them what you’re looking for or are comfortable with, not what you make. And also not lying about it.
Ranges can be good too so if they offer you the bottom of the range you can counter to the top, which may be based on bonus structure or benefits being less than you were expecting.
I’m so glad I did my research in the first place
Is it an internal or external recruiter? External ones get paid a % of the salary you get hired for so don’t really have much incentive to lowball you.
Illegal in Massachusetts as well
Don’t say anything that can be interpreted as disclosing your current salary and definitely don’t lie about it.
Instead, as an example if your current salary is 200 say something like I am looking for something in the 200-225 range for my next opportunity. Perhaps bolstered by ‘based on what others from my firm/experience level have recently received for similar roles I am looking for...’ if you are comfortable saying it and it is true.
Illegal in IL
Legal in PA, but not in Philly.
