A recruiter contacted me about an incredibly interesting position. If the pay isn't within my range, I don't want to waste anyone's time. What's a polite way to bring up salary early without appearing too money-focused?

Just ask. They expect this question and shouldn't think any less of you for asking it. Also - there is nothing wrong with being money focused. The paycheck is the entire point of working. Most people, recruiters included, understand this.

I’ll say that I am incredibly excited about the position. I would like to make sure we are aligned on salary before moving forward. As long as you keep it all curiosity-based, it typically comes off fine.

Next phone call when you learn more about the role, ask what their desired comp is for the opportunity

like

This is what I would do!

I’d just ask tbh, but more often than not they’ll ask you.

Sometimes it’s good to go for like 2 interviews or so just to keep your reps up and then bail on them though, just a thought. Wasting a company’s time should never be your concern.

What have you budgeted for the salary range in this role?
Then make sure you do your homework for your area on what the role pays, what the companies paid for that role in the past and then where that sits with your desired compensation. You also want to look at total compensation or just base pay.

Just ask

Recently left the Big4 without a job lined up. I’m hearing all my friends talking about busy season woes and I’m so grateful to not be in that position. I keep thinking of the long hours and it’s making me not want to job hunt. I’ve been looking at industry related tax roles, and generally like accounting but am open to exploration. Is there any such role that gives good comp, great work/life balance (I don’t even wanna be near 60 hours), and overall interesting role/company?

I got unlucky and lost the game but I threw an absolute FIT, accusing my cousin of cheating because I knew how severely I’d cheated myself. How could he have won if HE didn’t cheat?!

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
