A resume can tell you a lot about someone's experience, but it rarely explains why they are applying for a particular role. I have seen experienced professionals pursue positions that appeared below their level because their priorities had changed, whether for better work life balance, less stress, or a different stage of life. Career decisions are often more personal and nuanced than they appear on paper. Should employers be open to conversations before labeling a candidate as overqualified?

As someone who's been out of work for 7 months now, I see both sides of the coin. I am applying to any and all roles that I genuinely think I can perform well regardless of salary, because savings is gone and I need to put food on the table. I will be grateful to land a role that pays $100k less than I used to make, and give my best while I am there, but I will also continue to apply until I land something more aligned with the full value I can bring.

I have interviewed for said role a coupe time now, and it's an interesting conversation to say the least. There may be people out there genuinely looking for a different career, but most everyone else will be similar to me, just looking to bridge the gap, and employers would rather hire the person that will still be with them a year later.

I stand with you on this

I'm actually very open to positions that I am overqualified for. But I've yet to have interviewed with an employer that was willing to look past that. I've told them I'm looking to become a subject matter expert in a few areas, and that's why I'm willing to take on these type of positions. But I think they're fearful that I won't stay. It's a shame because it would really be a win-win for both of us.

Market is just weird rn, don't beat yourself up over rejections. I am hearing both hiring managers saying they can't fill junior support roles and laid off folks saying interviews are becoming way more technical and ridiculous like you're supposed to vibe code a full admin system to increase resolution turnaround (wild tangent for example, but you get what I mean).

Employers sift through dozens and dozens of resumes and profiles and a lot of them are full of fluff. You also end up wasting time once candidates come in for an interview and you discover they are full of fluff too because the resume may have been pristine too. So there really isn't time to do nuanced research and examination of every resume that comes in.

I would love to say "I got laid off from a job I loved and miss my co-workers that were let go as well. Now I'm fitting for my life."

@IBM1 it happened to me too. they hired someone else. A few months later the same position was open and I applied and got it. Of course it was a bad environment once i was on the inside They told me they felt bad for me after the first interview.

I am an associate at an AM200 firm and was (IMO) very clear prior to accepting this role that I value work-life balance and wanted to try to keep work at night on the weekends to a minimal, but since February, it seems like it’s always something that requires my time as needed disregarding “business hours” or my personal schedule. Thoughts on whether to bring this up or continue to be a team player until I burn out and pay off my student loans?

Hi! I have worked in management roles in tech, mainly in analytics, for approximately 10 years. My TC has fluctuated (currently around 135K CAD), but it seems like it's relatively easy to breach the 100K bar, but hard to breach the 150K bar. I now work at the CBC, but I have worked in the private sector too. What is the most realistic way to move to 200K? 1) Continue moving the ladder to a VP position, 2) Switch to Pre-Sale, 3) Switch to Consulting, 4) Work from a U.S. company from Canada.

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. If the end goal would be that the friend might one day be a product manager and me an engineering manager taking instructions from the same friend, isn't consultant profile an easier path to growth. How does contract to hire work? If I’m offered $37/hr on w2 for 3 months and then possibly a permanent position, how much can I expect to get annually as a full time company employee as a BI data analyst II? I have a M.S. and certificates in DA but this will be my first job as DA.
I prefer working for what is offered on contract without negotiating, and then negotiate when I transition into the company itself so I have a better chance of getting the contract position and show my skills.
