F500 companies generally have at least one person on the planning/transactional side.
Bigger the company, the more there are. My experience suggests no chance at those roles before manager and to get the better ones is more of a 6+ YOE heavy manager or SM.
If there’s significant prior experience (international especially) that is of value then that will be a benefit.
Tax planning or international tax in industry. M&A tax in industry is a possibility but not common. If you stay until manager you’ll have lots of good options.
I would not say “lots” lol. Very few options even at manager and up.
Leaving m&a is very hard. I did it within the last year and there were very few options. I have another coworker who did it and it took him over a year of looking. I took a tax counsel role though but it was very difficult to get.
Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.
Similar experience it takes time to find the right fit.
Went big4 M&A —> in house M&A —> tax counsel at same company. Also happy to discuss.
There are deceptively few options. Hard to leave to law firm or government. Best case scenario you go inside to PE or family office in a tax planning role or something like that.
personally know 8 or 9 that left my international tax group to biglaw in 2020-2022 (NYC)
This was why I chose international tax over M&A tax, due to M&A being limited in exits. There aren’t a ton for M&A but you may be able to swing a planning or in-house counsel role for a large enough company. You’ll want to get to at least manager in public though since I think the roles are limited for seniors.
